    The English Language holds great importance in Polytechnics and Engineering Colleges of Assam, as it plays a vital role in fostering effective communication and enhancing student’s employability. English is commonly used as a medium of Instruction. Most of the course materials, textbooks, and lectures are conducted in English. Proficiency in English is essential for students to understand and excel in their academic subjects. English skills enable students to access and comprehend these resources, enhancing their understanding of core subjects and keeping them updated with the latest advancements in their respective fields. English language has played an important role in opening the doors in personal and professional life and in Engineering education too, it occupies a vital position. It is indeed a most important medium of gathering information from various printed, audio visual or electronic media and materials, communicating in office and also for furthering in the academic career. It severs as a widow of intellectual and cultural ventilations and enables people to peep into the vast materials and technological prosperity that our advanced distant neighbour countries have attained in recent days and adopt their techniques to lead our nation to a goal.

    If we define the term communication it refers to the art of sharing or exchanging information with someone. It is a process of exchanging messages between the sources and the audience through spoken or written signals. As it is the age of technology, communication is possible trough various means. Communication is very essential for social life. Human being need to communicate for getting their wants and desires fulfilled.  Not only in social life, communication is essential in professional life too. One needs to be efficient enough in the use of appropriate language expressions and tone to maintain good social and professional bond. Communication skills are fundamental requirements of engineers. No matter however qualified and proficient they might be in their academic career, they need to process high level of proficiency in communication.

 

    English is a global language used for communication and interaction in various professional fields, including engineering and technology. Engineering students need to have a good command of English to keep pace with the latest developments, research, and technologies in their respective fields. English is the most widely spoken language in the world, serving as a global medium of communication. In Polytechnics and Engineering colleges, students need to communicate and collaborate with peers, faculty members and professionals from diverse backgrounds. Proficiency in English allows them to effectively express their ideas, present technical information, and engage in international conversations related to engineering and technology.

    English proficiency is highly valued by employers. Strong English skills are highly valued by employers, as they demonstrate effective communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills. Many industries and companies in Assam, as well as across India and the world, require employees who can effectively communicate in English. Strong English skills can open up job opportunities and career growth prospects. The Polytechnics and Engineering colleges of Assam aims to prepare students for successful careers in the engineering industry. Many engineering and technology companies have a global presence and require employees who can interact with clients, colleagues, and stakeholders proficiently in English. Engineering and technical fields often have a specialized vocabulary and terminology that is predominantly in English. Students in engineering need to understand and use this technical vocabulary to comprehend their coursework, collaborate with peers, and communicate effectively in their future workplaces. Clear and concise communication is crucial for documenting projects, writing reports, and presenting findings. English proficiency allows students to write technical documents accurately, ensuring effective communication within their teams and with potential clients or investors. Proficiency in English allows engineering students to access a wide range of resources, journals, and online databases, enabling them to stay updated with the latest advancements in their fields of study.

    English is even necessary for students who aspire to pursue higher education. Most postgraduate programs and universities require English language proficiency tests such as TOEFL or IELTS. A good command of English will enable students to fulfil these requirements and pursue advanced degrees. Most postgraduate programs and research institutions require a certain level of English language proficiency, as research papers, seminars, and interactions with faculty members are conducted in English. English proficiency goes beyond technical knowledge. Students need to develop their English language skills to express their ideas, participate in group discussions, present their projects, and write reports or research papers. English language training in Polytechnics and Engineering colleges helps students develop essential soft skills such as public speaking, critical thinking, and analytical abilities. These skills are valuable in their professional lives, enabling them to present technical ideas confidently, participate in discussions, and contribute to team projects effectively.
