Assam Engineering Institute was established on 16 January, 1948. The
first Head of the institute of Assam Engineering Institute was Hari Prasad
Baruah who was the retired I S E.
1948. Earlier the name of the Institute was Assam Civil Engineering
School ( from its inception)
1951. The management was transferred to the Education Department, Govt.
of Assam.
1952. AICTE Team visited the Institute and submitted report for
development and registration.
1953. The Institute was first rename as “Assam Civil Engineering
Institute”.
1954. Introduction of 3 year course in Civil Engineering (National
Certificate Course)
1955. Granted AICTE affiliation.
1956 Rename as Assam Engineering Institute.
Introduction of Mechanical & Electrical
Engineering course.
1958. Creation of Directorate of Technical Education and SCTE, Assam and
the Institute came under direct control of DTE.
1964. Compilation of Auditorium and Administrative Building.
1965. Creation of Chemical Operation Branch, now rename as Chemical
Engineering.
1973. Silver Jubilee.
1978. Introduction of Semester System.
1983. Introduction of Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering
Branch.
1984. Construction of Hostel No 4
1985. Introduction of Computer Engineering Branch.
1986. Installation of Computers.
1987. Starting Girls Hostel in temporary accommodation at Institute
Quarter.
1989. Installation of inter-cum system
1989. Starting QIP Centre.
1989. 4th NE Inter-Poly meet.
1990. IMPCT system introduce under D.O.E.
1990. ISTE Summer school on Electronics and Model Making.
1991. Starting Post Diploma in Computer Application.
1991. Commencement of World Bank Project.
1991. ISTE Winter school on Computer for office management.
1995-96. Compilation of Civil Works under IMPACT Project.
1995-96. Vertical Extension of main Building in north wings.
1996-97. Recognition of PPDCA by AICTE.
1996-97. Six month course for Mechanical Operator for NEEPCO employee
under continuing education.
1996-7. Starting construction of Girls Hostel.
1996-7. Industry- Institute Interaction MOU signed with various
industries.

Application, Idea of project making for Tiny Micro Enterprise etc.
