Medical College

John Berry White Medical School was established in 1998-99 at Dibrugarh, which was upgraded to Assam Medical College, is the first Medical College in the North East India.                John Berry White, is a British surgeon, who came to Assam in the year 1858 and served under the East India Company for 24 years. He use his life time earning of Rs. 50,000.00 to build the medical college. The present valuation donated by the white is over then 50 Million. White was the pioneer of the modern medical education in the region.

At first the school introduce Allopathic Mediacl Education and conferring LMP Diploma. In the year 1938 in the annual meeting of Licentiate Medical Practitioner, Assam Branch under the chairmanship of Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi, the then premier of the Congress Govt. of Assam decided to upgrade the school to a full fledged Medical College. Assam Medical College was formally established in 2rd November 1947.


The Govt. Ayurvedic Medical College was established in the year 1948 at Jalukbari, Guwahati. At present it is affiliated by Srimanta Sankardeva University of Health Science, Assam (SSUHSA) . Befor independent the Lahor Congress passed a resolution to establish institutions related to Indian culture & heritage and scientific knowledge and to established at least one more Ayurvedic College in each of the state of the country in order to foster and patronize the Indian system of medicine. And the college is the out come of the proposal.
  The establishment of Govt. Ayurvedic College at Guwahati(Assam) is also having the aim to serve the following functions.
       a)    To expand the Ayurvedic Education in systemic way.
       b)   To spread the practical knowledge for preparation of medicines as well as to acquire clinical knowledge through teaching and study of this ancient science for healing touch to the people of entire NE region of India.
       c)    To serve the people of Assam and whole NE region in promotive of health and curative aspects.
       d)    To identify and cultivate medicinal plants and its practical use.
      e)    The college has its own hospital, functioning with both OPD and IPD section to serve the ailing people.
        f)    The college has its own manufacturing unit, now it has been upgraded to state pharmacy for preparation of medicines and for practical demonstration to the students.

Gauhati Medical College was formally inaugurated on20th September 1960 with 100 Students. At first the classes were arranged at Government Ayurvedic College, Jalukbari, Guwahati. The first principal was S.N. Sharma
