CONTRIBUTION OF ASSAM ENGINEERING INSTITUTE TOWARDS THE NATION

       Assam Engineering Institute , Chandmari, Guwahati-3 was established in the year 1948 by the Govt. of Assam  in the line of Polytechnic Education System in India to produce Diploma Engineers in Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, Computer and Electronic Engineering to provide service towards the development of the country in their respective fields.

 

     Since the beginning, Assam Engineering Institute have produced high quality diploma engineers, who have provided excellent service in the various technical departments of both the State and Central Govt. departments as well as in the private sector in India and abroad. Thus many organisations have been able to upgrade themselves resulting in the development of the nation.

 

      Being one of the oldest diploma Institute in the North-East of India, Assam Engineering Institute plays an important role in the field of technical education in the region. The Institute was first started as “Assam Civil Engineering School” and offered a Diploma course in Civil Engineering. Gradually, as the demand for technical personnel in other fields was increasing, Diploma courses were introduced in other disciplines.

 

   In Assam Engineering Institute, we have highly qualified and experienced faculty along with one of the best infrastructure, thus Assam Engineering Institute have been selected to conduct many Skill Development Programmes along with other courses by the Govt. of India and many other organisations.

       Besides normal academic activities, Assam Engineering Institute (AEI) is also undertaking several schemes of the Government of India under The Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD), Ministry of Information Technology and All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and Govt. of Assam. The "Skill Development Training Programmes" conducted in Assam Engineering Institute have benefited many underprivileged along with the backward classes and school drop outs of the community.

      At present there are various vocational training and entrepreneurial development courses being run / completed at Assam Engineering Institute are as follows :-

A follow up scheme of Project IMPACT (under the DoE, presently Ministry of Information Technology), initiated in 1990, for which resources are to be generated through short term courses called CEEP (Continuing Engineering Education Programme) and Consultancy services.

Sponsored by Ministry of Information Technology, Govt. of India, the aim of the scheme is to impart technical training to the educated youth (especially SC/ST and economically backward classes) to enable them to be self-employed.

Community Development Through Polytechnic Scheme (CDTP)

Various short term skill development vocational training courses and technical services for the community.

 

Scheme, introduced in 2009-10, under MHRD(Now under Directorate of Training, Govt. of India) for the following activities :

Socio-economic Survey and planning, Transfer of technology, Manpower development and training, Technical Support services and Dissemination of information to the rural/poor/deprived community.

Modernization and Removal of Obsolescence

(MODROBs) under AICTE

Modernized different laboratories with modern  machines & equipments and various short term courses and R&D works DONE in the all departments of AEI.

AICTE has selected AEI in 2001 onward for this project by which an amount has been sanctioned for purchasing new equipment, conducting Research Works and short term courses.

Indian Society for Technical Education (ISTE) Membership

Various Short term courses and seminars for which proposals have to be submitted to ISTE beforehand.

Sponsored by the ISTE, various courses and Seminars are to be conducted involving external faculty and resource persons from various organizations/institutions.

6.

Integrating Persons with Disabilities (PWD) in the mainstream of Technical and Vocational Education.

1. Diploma courses increased by 25 seats exclusively for Persons with Disabilities.

2. Various short term skill development vocational training courses for 100 Persons with Disabilities annually.

 

 AEI has been selected by the Department of Secondary and Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India, to implement this centrally sponsored scheme in November 2000, and works under this scheme have been initiated since October 2001.

AEI has been selected by the KKHSOU(Krishna Kanta Handique State Open University) Govt. of Assam) to implement  this State Govt. sponsored scheme .

Scheme implemented under AICTE from the year 2013-14 called Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme for  North Eastern States(AICTE-TEQIP-NES)/ NEQIP

 

 

      In addition to the above mentioned programmes/schemes, Assam Engineering Institute have some more of them , which are currently under process and will be implemented soon. Some of them are as follows,

1.Prdhan Mantri Rastriya  Kushal Yojona( Govt.of India)

2.Skill Development Centre (Sponsored by Power Grid Corporation)

3.NIOS(National Institute of Open Schooling)MHRD.GOI, skill centre.

4.Technical Training Centre (For IOC apprentices trainees).

  

     All the departments have already started its activities for NBA with the help from NEQIP project. In this process, Assam Engineering Institute and its departments have finalized their Department’s VISION, MISSION, PEOS and SAR  process.

 

Future of the Institute :-

 

       The Assam Engineering Institute has been producing the right kind of technical manpower necessary to sustain and promote industrial and economic growth for more than seventy years. The demand for technical and skilled man power in the North-Eastern region and other region of our country is increasing with the development of industries. With a well qualified staff and a lot of new equipment in the modernized laboratories, smart class room, language laboratory, the students have benefited by getting proper technical exposure and communication skill. Further, the Assam Engineering Institute has provided and will continue to provide its services to the society in general and industry in particular by providing right information , appropriate technology and high quality skill engineers.

 

Conclusion :-

 

           With NEQIP, institute industry interaction programmes, support of ITC, NBA  and other government aided project , Assam Engineering Institute have developed and is carrying on its growth to prepare its students to compete with the latest technologies and  along with the regular courses,

         Under "institute - industry interaction program" with different industries, Assam Engineering Institute already started the process to develop institute as self depended Institute.

         From all the above mentioned points, it is seen that  along with the regular courses, Assam Engineering Institute have successfully conducted many other programmes which have resulted in the Skill Development of many people of the society for self employment .

         Assam Engineering Institute step-up to transformed into a state-of-the-art Technical Institution for imparting technical education and vocational training for development and transfer of indigenous technology with modern one, which will cater to the needs of not only the locality but also the entire North Eastern region of India and become leader institute in entire the region.
